Encountering Dunhuang at Fo Guang Shan

Mr. He Shan is a well-known Chinese artist expatriate in the United States, and has great affinity with Fo Guang Shan for over 20 years. In 1994, when Fo Guang Shan was raising funds for Fo Guang University in Yilan, the community of artists and scholars in Taiwan started to launch an art auction. The artworks by Mr. He Shan were part of this event. Mr. He Shan devoted his whole life to the creation of magnificent works of art. The mural located in Main Shrine of Fo Guang Shan Taipei Vihara is one of his representative works. It was completed in August 1994, with a total length of 38 meters at a height of about 3.6 meters. The mural hangs on each sides of the main shrine; on the left wall it depicts Samantabhadra’s “Compassion, Joy, and Equanimity Pervade All Dharma Realm,” and on the right wall is Manjusri’s “Wisdom Light Shines on the Universe.” In the same year, Mr. He Shan held an exhibition at Fo Guang Shan in Kaohsiung. His paintings imitating the Dunhuang murals were subsequently collected at Fo Guang Shan; this album records such collection.

Anyone who visits the Main Shrine of Fo Guang Shan Taipei Vihara would be attracted to the murals on the walls. His exquisite skills and the use of delicate colors decorate the walls of the shrine. The Main Shrine has held many Dharma services led by the monastic community in the past 20 years, with countless devotees attending the services. In the “Praise of Incense,” it is written that, “Incense has just begun to burn in the censer, and the fragrance permeates the Dharma realm. Buddhas of the universe perceive it from near and far.” Facing the magnificent Buddhist figures, the devotees sincerely join their palms to make prostrations, and their body and mind have a place to settle. Therefore, I think that the profound meaning and impact in Buddhist art on the mind of all living beings are more than this!

Venerable Master Hsing Yun, my teacher and founder of Fo Guang Shan, understood that the Buddhism art when he was a novice monk. The magnificent Buddhist art has been created by the past patriarchs, Buddhist devotees, monks and artists, and their valuable contribution has made this become an important cultural heritage of humankind for more than 2,000 years. Therefore, when my teacher was establishing temples worldwide, he has made tremendous efforts in planning and designing the shrines and halls, as well as the Buddha statues and other Dharma objects. It is his hope that the solemn temples would be a refuge place of relief and protection for all sentient beings. My teacher has frequent collections with artists in the society, and often cares for them and respects them, especially those who create Buddhist art. The artists have been encouraged and supported in the exhibitions and publication of their works by him. Venerable Master Hsing Yun sincerely hopes that Buddhist art can be promoted and carried on.

The 20-volume Encyclopedia of Buddhist Arts was published in 2013 under the guidance and supporting of Venerable Master Hsing Yun. This set of volumes took 13 years to complete, and is the first compendium of the world’s Buddhist arts. It has become the best reference for the academic study in Buddhist art. This collection by Mr. He Shan contains the copies of Dunhuang mural. The editors of this album wrote the descriptions according to the pictures and texts of the Encyclopedia of Buddhist Arts. They verify his paintings by comparing them with the original murals, checking the location of each artwork. We hope to provide additional information to the readers so that they can know a little more about the hardships of Mr. He Shan during the years of his works at Dunhuang Caves; it is also our way of showing respect for the painter.

Mr. He Shan, now over 70 years old, is an art master nurtured in mainland China. He is both a painter and a scholar. His book, Culture of the Western Regions and Dunhuang Art, has been continuously reprinted for decades. His achievements today are obvious to everyone. Now we have published an album recording the collection of his works kept at Fo Guang Han. It is the hope that through his paintings, we can share the glorious history of Dunhuang Buddhist art to the public.
